People - Place - Possibilities:
A 3-step framework for making livable streets in Trichy.
The #streets4people challenge is an initiative under the Smart cities mission organized by ITDP - India,
the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), and the #Trichy City Corporation. The competition invited designs to reimagine the streets of the city as accessible, lively, and pedestrian-friendly public spaces.
the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), and the #Trichy City Corporation. The competition invited designs to reimagine the streets of the city as accessible, lively, and pedestrian-friendly public spaces.
Our design laid out a strategy for organizing the city traffic into #supeblocks freeing up neighborhood streets and concentrating activity on the arterial roads.
Our three-step framework for these streets includes restricting vehicular encroachment of streets by defining uniform carriageways & compact intersections; developing healthy corridors that feature Non-Motorised Transport (NMT) facilities and greenery; creating vibrant pockets that transform the streets into active public spaces. These are presented as a toolkit that can be adapted to different streets in participation with the stakeholders.
Hoping that initiatives such as the #Streets4People challenge will inspire the government body in carrying forth much-needed action in making our streets safe, friendly, and active for all users.
